Atheists Kill ‘Charlie Brown Christmas’

Atheists get Charlie Brown Christmas cancelled.

A Little Rock, Arkansas church has cancelled its stage production of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” after a local atheist group complained about it being seen by school children.

As previously reported, the Arkansas Society of Freethinkers protested a field trip by Little Rock’s Terry Elementary School to see the show at Agape Church, scheduled for December 14. One mother complained to the group that she “reluctantly” let her child go out of fear her child would be bullied or ridiculed if she did not consent.

Attorney and vice president of the Freethinkers, Anne Orsi, explained that even though the field trip is completely voluntary, “the problem is that it’s got religious content and it’s being performed in a religious venue and that doesn’t just blur the line between church and state — it oversteps it entirely.”

After school officials did not back down on the issue, Orsi announced she had gotten legal advice on filing a lawsuit over the matter. A pro-Christian legal group volunteered their services to help the school and church defend their rights. But Happy Caldwell, pastor of Agape Church, cancelled the show on Tuesday, reports Fox News.

Pastor Happy Caldwell

“It is not our desire to put hard-working, sacrificial teachers and cast members in harm’s way,” Pastor Caldwell explained. “While we regret the loss of students who will not get this particular opportunity right now, we have taken the school matinees off the table.”

Pastor Caldwell praised what he called the “courageous stand” that the school’s principal took in “not succumbing to the pressure of one complaint voice to the Arkansas Society of Free Thinkers and the media.”

He said it was clear “Merry Christmas Charlie Brown” did not pose a constitutional issue.

“Christmas is a Christian holiday — hence it’s name – Christmas,” the pastor wrote in his statement. “Our program addresses its origins with light-hearted songs and theatre. The context of the birth of Christ is broadly described in both Old and New Testament texts.”

The pastor said the school children are more than welcome to attend weekend performances of the show.

I have objectively viewed the above video and my learned opinion is that there is NO “separation of church and state” issue involved here, so that any dramatization of the contents of this video would be perfectly suitable for the viewing of young school children and would have no deleterious effect.

Chewbacca are you even a member of the ASF?
I am and have been since the beginning. This is the first I’m hearing of a Chewbacca in our group, so your comment Approving of the video holds no weight.
ASF was simply calling out a public school system that planned a field trip to promote one religious message and world view over all others (which is a violation of our Constitution).

Lighten up. It’s called humor. I am against anybody pushing their particular religious views down anybody’s throat as you are. I lived five years in the Philippines and I know what it means to live in a society completely dominated by the Catholic Church and it is restrictive. But you are obsessive. Over and out.
No I am not a member. I am an atheist. But I find radical atheists to be like a religion. It’s as if you worship atheism. I’m not going to post another comment about this.

      Yes we would.

when they finally beat out all the christians, there won’t much more in their way. They will be the undisputed leaders, and they will not be kind. They never stop, every christmas is another chance, they will win.

I am a Jewish Atheist. I grew up in New England. Pure WASP country. I love Christmas. Atheists are not like that. These are the few anarchistic a–holes. They are numerically irrelevant.

So the headline reads we killed him yet the last line invites the community to come see the show over the rest of the weekend. We didn’t kill him at all. We were simply advising a public school system not to take a field trip that would promote one worldview over all others. That’s the separation of church and state people. The legal letter urging the school not to go cited examples of court cases showing the precedent as to why the trip, even with an Opt-Out, would have been illegal. Had this been any other religious worldview our reaction would have been the same. Don’t you all love your Constitution enough to call out when someone plans on violating it? We do.

The following is actually much more worrisome and should be those who do say they believe in Yahsuah the Christ: “The War on Christmas” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCLnie3HPMg

Isa 65:15. And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name: (i.e. Christians)
