Texas Congressman and presidential hopeful Ron Paul beats US President Barack Obama in a new poll released Tuesday, continuing a long string of surveys showing the conservative-libertarian has what it takes to win the American presidency.
The Rassmussen Reports poll shows Congressman Paul beating President Obama 43-30. This is the second survey to show the Texan winning in a head-to-head match up against the incumbent. A Harris poll conducted last September showed Congressman Paul besting President Obama, 51-49.
Several other recent polls show Congressman Paul within striking distance of President Obama. Another survey from CNN taken around the same time showed Congressman Paul only four points behind President Obama, while a Gallup poll and a Rasmussen poll taken in late August showed the two in a statistical tie.
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, the odds-on favorite to win the nomination, is statistically tied with President Obama in the new poll. Rick Santorum is 3 points behind the president, while Newt Gingrich does the worst, losing by 10 point to President Obama.
Ron Paul national campaign chairman Jesse Benton said in a statement that the new poll shows “in order to win back the White House, Republicans must nominate a consistent candidate that offers something besides the status quo. Ron Paul is that candidate.”
While the polls are encouraging, Congressman Paul has yet to win a Republican primary or caucus. And even if he does bring in a significant number of delegates, getting the nomination during a brokered convention would be a very hard argument for him to make
