Pennsylvania voters say presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, who once represented the state in the US Senate, cannot beat President Obama in a general election, a new poll finds.
The Morning Call/Muhlenberg College poll, taken between February 15 – 21, shows that only 13-percent feel strongly that Santorum can beat President Obama, while 45-percent feel strongly that he cannot. The survey has a 4-point margin of error.
Santorum does favor better than rival Mitt Romney in the state, although President Obama does beat them both; 49 – 41 against Santorum, and 48 – 37 against Romney.
The state’s Republican voters also have a much higher favorable view of Santorum than Romney. Nearly two-thirds have a positive opinion of Santorum, 23-percent do not and 12-percent have no opinion. Just 40-percent of Republicans have a favorable view of Romney, as many view him as unfavorable and 21-percent have no opinion.
Santorum lost his Pennsylvania Senate seat to Democrat Bob Casey back in 2006.
The Republican presidential primary is scheduled to be held on April 24.
