Police in New Deli, India are investigating the bombing of a car used by the Israeli ambassador’s wife as a possible terror attack, but have not said who may be responsible.
The Monday afternoon attack happened when a person on a motorcycle drove up the car, placed a bomb on it, and sped away.
The bomb went off seconds later, injuring four people, including the Israeli ambassador’s wife and her driver.
40-year-old Tal Yehoshua-Koren, who herself is a diplomat and working in the mission, was operated upon to remove shrapnel from her spine and liver last night. Her left leg suffered nerve damage from the blast, and while doctors have tried to repair her injuries as much as possible, the leg is paralyzed for now. She also suffered injuries to her lungs. It is likely she will be airlifted back to Israel once her condition stabilizes, reports First Post.
The three other people, including the driver of the car, suffered minor injuries.
While investigators have released a rough description of a suspect in the case and are treating the incident as a terror attack, they will not publicly say who they believe was behind it. Anonymous sources have told Indian television network NDTV that police have conducted raids on guest houses and hotels, with a focus on Iranian nationals.
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly blamed Iran and Hezbollah for the attack, linking it to a failed bombing attempt of the Israeli embassy the Georgian capital of Tbilisi yesterday. Bomb-blast investigators from Israel are being sent to India to help in the investigation.
The Indian attack is similar in nature to a series deadly bombings in Iran that have killed four prominent nuclear scientists. Israel and the West claim Iran is secretly building a nuclear weapons program. Iran denies the claims, insisting their pursuit of nuclear power is for peaceful purposes only.
Iran has firmly denied the allegations. Ramin Mehmanparast, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said, “We categorically reject the accusations made by the Zionist regime. They are part of a propaganda war… Iran condemns all acts of terrorism.”
