Obama: Billionaires Should Pay “Jew” Tax Rate
US President Barack Obama made an apparent anti-Semitic gaffe Saturday, when during a speech he said that billionaires should pay the same tax rate as a “Jew.”
In attempting to portray himself as a “warrior for the working class” at the Congressional Black Caucus annual awards dinner in Washington, Obama said, “When you start saying, at a time when the top one-tenth of one percent have seen their incomes go up four or five times over the last twenty years, and folks at the bottom have seen their incomes decline, and your response is that you want poor folks to pay more — give me a break.”
Then came the Freudian slip.
“If asking a billionaire to pay the same tax rate as a Jew — as a janitor — makes me a warrior for the working class, I wear that as a badge of honor.”
The timing of the gaffe could not have come at a worse moment for the president, whose support among Jewish voters is steadily deteriorating due to the perception that he is hostile towards Israel. This can best seen in the election of Republican Bob Turner in the heavily-Jewish, New York Ninth congressional district that spawned Democrat Party heavies Geraldine Ferraro, Chuck Schumer and the disgraced Anthony Weiner. The short campaign saw influential Jewish Democrats, including former Mayor Ed Koch and state representative Dov Hikind champion the Republican to “send a message” to Obama on his stance towards Israel.
The Jerusalem Post notes that a Public Policy poll taken days before the special congressional election found that a plurality of voters said Obama’s Israel policy was “very important” in determining their votes. Among those voters, Republican candidate Robert Turner led by a 71-22 margin. Only 22-percent of Jewish voters approved President Obama’s handling of Israel.
