Mugabe Has Cancer: Wikileaks

Pics of a dozing Mugabe fueled speculation he was seriously ill.

A new diplomatic cable released by whistle-blowing website Wikileaks bolsters rumors that Zimbabwe dictator Robert Mugabe is dying from prostate cancer.

The cable from June 6, 2008 quotes central bank Governor Gideon Gono as saying doctors told Mugabe that his prostate cancer had mestasticized and he only had 3-5 years left to live.

Speculation that the 87-year-old dictator is dying of cancer broke in August 2010, after a frail-looking Mugabe was seen dozing off at public meetings and having to be led around by aides. Several opposition papers reported at the time that Mugabe’s urologist said the disease was spreading faster than any treatment can help.

Gono also told U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe James McGee that Mugabe would step down from power soon after elections were held.  The Ambassdor estimated in the cable that Mugabe would stay in power no longer than Decemeber 2009.

However, as of this writing, Mugabe is still in tight control of Zimbabwe.

Gideon Gono

Gono has denied being the source of the information to Bloomberg News. In a later interview with The Zimbabwe Daily News, he colorfully denounced the wikileaked cable.

“Only God knows how long each one of us is going to live and not being endowed with Godly powers to extend or shorten life, it is crap to even waste time commenting on the rogue ambassador’s opinion, fictional mind, or what kind of grass he had smoked as he was penning his cables to his masters,” Gono told the paper.

Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba didn’t answer two calls made by the paper to his mobile phone, which didn’t accept voice messages.
