David Wu Announces Resignation
Democrat Congressman from Oregon, David Wu, has announced he will resign from office after it was revealed over the weekend that he made an “unwelcome sexual assault” on the teenage daughter of an old friend.
“With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt ceiling crisis,” Wu said in a press statement. “This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues.”
As previously reported, Wu, 56, acknowledged to his senior aides that the incident did in fact happen over the Thanksgiving weekend of 2010, but it was consensual.
The Democrat had been in seclusion since news of the sex scandal broke.
Wu made his announcement moments after both US Senators from Oregon, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkely, both Democrats, called on him to step down, reports The Oregonian.
Just yesterday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called for an Ethics investigation into the charges levied against Wu.
