Assange Partied At US Embassy In Iceland: MP

Birgitta Jónsdóttir from The Movement in Parliament

Julian Assange rubbed elbows with diplomats at a party at the American Embassy in Iceland back in 2009, according to an Icelandic MP and ally of the Wikileaks founder.

Birgitta Jónsdóttir, MP from The Movement, told the UK Daily Telegraph that she invited Assange to a cocktail party at the Embassy in December 2009 as a “prank.” Jónsdóttir wound up not going, but Assange went by himself.

“He certainly had fun at the party,” Jónsdóttir says.

The Wikileaks founder, who had already released many embarrassing documents about Guantanamo Bay and Sarah Palin, spent a long time talking with Sam Watson, the embassy’s deputy chief of mission. Watson was a substitute for the US Ambassador to Iceland at the time.

Although Icelandic newspaper DV reports Assange and Jónsdóttir have not spoken in some time, she does actively support him through her Twitter feed and has proposed giving him asylum in Iceland, ala Bobby Fischer.

The American Embassy has not commented on the revelation.
