Obama Injured In B-Ball Game
US President Barack Obama received 12 stitches to his lower lip after being elbowed in the mouth during a friendly basketball game on Friday morning.
Rey Decerega, Program Director for Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, was named as the person who administered the elbow to Obama’s mouth, reports The Washington Post.
Decerega, who was on the opposing team, went to make a shot and the President tried to block.
“I learned today the president is both a tough competitor and a good sport. I enjoyed playing basketball with him this morning,” Decerega said. “I’m sure he’ll be back out on the court again soon.”
Obama was treated under local anesthesia at the White House. Doctors used a finer thread in sewing up Obama, which meant more stitches but will result in a smaller scar.
In addition to Decerega, others playing in the game included Reggie Love, Obama’s personal assistant and a former forward at Duke University; Education Secretary and former Harvard University player Arne Duncan; and Avery Robinson, Obama’s nephew.
