The Italian government has decided to exclude Islam from a bill that would share tax revenues with organized faiths in the country.
Fundamentalist imams, polygamy and an overall failure to uphold women’s rights by Muslim immigrants were cited as obstacles for baring Islam from the proposal, which allocates 8 percent of tax revenue and distributes it among organized faiths in the country.
Under the plan, Italians who do not want their their tax payments be paid to organized religions can ask it go to charities and cultural projects instead.
The decision was blasted by COREIS, one of Italy’s largest Muslim groups. “Work should be begun on legally recognising those moderate Muslims who have for years shown themselves to be reliable interlocutors who are free of and fundamentalist ideology,” said COREIS head Yahya Pallavicini.
Islam is not an established religion in Italy and there is only one official mosque in the country, Rome’s Grand Mosque.
