Ex-CIA: Israel May Attack This Month
A group of ex-CIA officials have written an open letter to US President Barack Obama, warning him that Israel may attack Iran as early as August, which “would likely lead to a wider war.”
“Israel’s leaders would calculate that once the battle is joined, it will be politically untenable for you to give anything less than unstinting support to Israel, no matter how the war started, and that U.S. troops and weaponry would flow freely. Wider war could eventually result in the destruction of the state of Israel,” say the letter written by the group VIPS (Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity), which includes W. Patrick Lang, Larry Johnson, and Ray McGovern among its ranks.
Israel National News describes describes the letter as being “distinctly anti-Israel.”
However, influential neo-con and former CIA Middle East specialist Reuel Marc Gerecht, who wrote a recent article in The Weekly Standard arguing for an Israeli strike on Iran, also believes the US would be pulled into such a conflict.
Obama might be “obliged” to threaten major retaliation against Iran “immediately after an Israeli surprise attack,” Gerecht wrote.
VIPS also believes an Israeli attack on Iran could happen as early as this month. Previous speculation agrees with this theory, as Iran is set to finish its first nuclear power plant, a joint venture with Russia located in Bushear, in September.
Some speculate an Israeli attack would fall on August 10, as a nighttime air raid on Iranian facilities would be aided by the total darkness of the New Moon. While the US did start the First Gulf War during a New Moon, it launched airstrikes against Iraq during the light of a Full Moon on March 18, 2003.
47 House Republicans introduced legislation on July 22 endorsing an Israeli attack on Iran. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, said on August 1 that the US has readied a military plan to prevent Iran from going nuclear – but hopes it would not be put to use.
In their open letter to President Obama, VIPS warns, “This can be stopped, but only if you move quickly to pre-empt an Israeli attack by publicly condemning such a move before it happens [emphasis in the original].”
Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro made his first official governmental appearance Saturday in a speech to his parliament where he warned a “nuclear holocaust” would happen soon, and urged US President Barack Obama against going down that path.
The attendance of American Ambassador John Roos at ceremonies marking the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima – the first time a US delegate has been sent in 65 years – has been seen as evidence that Obama wants to further his goal of establishing a world free of nuclear weapons.
