New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously Tuesday against denying landmark status to a building located blocks away from Ground Zero that will be knocked down and replaced with an Islamic mosque.
It was hoped that granting landmark status to 5-47 Park Place would prevent its owners, Soho Properties, from demolishing the building and building a 13-story Islamic center that would contain a mosque in its place, located just two blocks north from where the World Trade Center once stood before being destroyed in America’s largest terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
CNN reports that even if 5-47 Park Place had gotten landmark status, Soho Properties would have still been able to turn the existing structure into a mosque. Also, CNN notes there is an Islamic prayer space already located inside the building, a fact overlooked by many.
The vote was roundly condemned by New Yorkers, conservatives, and Republican politicians. Rudy Giuliani, who was New York City mayor on September 11, called plans for the Ground Zero Mosque a “desecration” that “decent Muslims” should also be against.
Sarah Palin also blasted the project from her Twitter account, asking “Peaceful New Yorkers” to “refute” the Ground Zero Mosque plan.
The project has the backing of many Democrat politicians, including gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who officially is an Independent.

The approval by this bunch of morons proves to me that they are traitors. The developer has said he would erect a memorial to the 911 victims. Actually it would not be a memorial it would be a trophy. There are plenty of other places to build these things, it does not have to be constructed at that site.
