A report issued Monday by the Office of Congressional Ethics states that indicted California Democrat Congresswoman Maxine Waters knew about a possible conflict of interest when she advocated for a bank her husband owned stock in and was one of its directors, but acted anyway.
While specific charges have not been released, a year-old report was made public by the Office, which can be read in full here courtesy of The New York Times.
“She was in a predicament, because [her husband] Sidney had been involved in the bank,” the report quotes an unnamed Congressperson titled “Representative A.” “But OneUnited people were coming to her for help. She knew she should say no, but it bothered her.”
The New York Times reports that the mysterious person quoted in the report is Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank, who warned Waters to not get involved with advocating for OneUnited.
As previously reported, Waters allegedly tried to secure a US $50 million loan for the self-described “First Black-Owned Internet Bank,” OneUnited. Her husband, Sidney Williams, served on its board until early 2008 and had about US$250,000 in bank stock.
The Office of Congressional Ethics announced Monday that charges will be filled against Waters, who proclaimed her innocence in a press statement following the announcement. A trial will commence this fall.
