New York police have arrested and charged a 15-year-old Liberian immigrant for committing a “hate crime” assault against a Mexican immigrant in Port Richmond, Staten Island.
The suspect is now a naturalized US citizen.
Police say victim, 18-year-old Christian Vazquez, was beaten and robbed of US $10 near the suspect’s home, reports The New York Daily News.
Vazquez told NY1 that his attacker used anti-Mexican slurs at him during the attack, including “wetback,” “mojado,” and “immigrant.”
He also told NY1 that it was a gang of four attacked him, after one in the group distracted him.
The incident is the 11th such bias attack against Mexicans in Port Richmond since April.
Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa recently decided to capitalize on the surrounding publicity by members of his group hand out fliers promoting the organization.
