Congressional plans to implement a Value Added Tax (VAT) are “dead as a doornail,” says Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank.
Frank made the pronouncement on CNBC on Saturday, reports thehill.com.
US President Barack Obama suggested a VAT could be implemented in an effort to balance the budget.
“I know that there’s been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. That is something that has worked for some countries,” Obama said in April about the tax. “And before, you know, I start saying ‘this makes sense or that makes sense,’ I want to get a better picture of what our options are.”
Frank lashed out at what he called “Republican scare tactics” that ensured there is “zero chance” of the tax seeing the light of day.
