Drills will take place in the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced joint US-South Korean military drills will start July 25 in the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea.
“These defensive, combined exercises are designed to send a clear message to North Korea that its aggressive behaviour must stop,” Gates said in a joint statement with his South Korean counterpart, Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan.
The US claims North Korea is responsible for the March sinking of South Korean warship the Cheonan, which killed 46 crew members.
North Korea denies the charge and has threatened a military response if the United Nations condemns it for the sinking of the Cheonan.
China, the only ally of North Korea in the region, angrily responded to the US-North Korean announcement by displaying its own military maneuvers on state television Tuesday.
