Obama Visits Black Power Ice Cream

Coincidence? Obama enjoys a scoop

A Saturday jaunt to a Maine ice cream parlor by US President Barack Obama has brought serious concern after analysis of the the shop’s logo shows a striking similarity to the logo used to represent Black Supremacy in America.

Obama was photographed Saturday by reporters enjoying a scoop of vanilla in front of Mount Desert Island Ice Cream in Bar Harbor, Maine, which proudly advertises its “fearless flavor” on its website. However, its black,  clenched-fist logo bears an uncanny resemblance to the one created to represent the supremacist movement in the 1960′s.

In fact, store owner Linda Parker admits to intentionally modeling her logo after that of the Black Power Movement, telling a reporter in 2008,  “Everyone has seen enough cows in the hillside.”

The US Justice Department has come under scrutiny recently after its Obama-appointed Attorney General, Eric Holder, threw out a case of voter intimidation against members of the New Black Panther Party.

Black Power and Ice Cream Logos

Since then, former Justice Department lawyer J. Christian Adams has come forward to tell the American public that racial “payback” is underway at the Justice Department, against Whites in favor of Blacks.

Republican Congressman Frank Wolf has asked the Inspector General to investigate possible Obama Administration involvement with  the Justice Department on its handling of the New Black Panther voter intimidation case.

“Something is rotten” at the Justice Department, Rep. Wolf says.

Why President Obama chose to patronize an establishment with such a politically-sensitive logo at this time is uncertain. Some speculate that his handlers, or Obama himself, decided on the press shoot to send a subtle message to his core radical base.

UPDATE (July 21, 2010): The Bar Harbor Times, a local newspaper in Bar Harbor, Maine, picked up on this article and the controversy it started. They even interviewed the owner of Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream, Linda Parker, who called this report “crazy.”

UPDATE (July 22, 2010): More MainStream Media coverage of this article from CBS News and NY Magazine, of all places.

UPDATE (July 23, 2010): This article inspires a Barack Obama Ice Cream naming contest (winner: Barocky Road w/Marxmallows), and the influential (yet left-leaning) DC blogger Wonkette also does a write-up.

Another nelson mandela with an american accent, promoting racial tolerance where there is no tolerance for whites

  2. RT says

Finally, I saw this picture yesterday afternoon (Friday) and was shocked. This is no coincidence. I’m sure it was calculated and planned. There is a message being sent and it probably is not a good one.

Obama sure seems to be going to parts of the country where wealth is concentrated (Asheville, Marthas Vineyard, Mt. Desert) is he letting the old money know he coming after them?
    This photo is very telling!

  3. Maineiac says

You do realize the shop is owned by a white woman (a blonde no less) with a white husband, right? It is a small ice cream store where she gets up at 3 AM to make the ice cream herself. Something tells me, she's probably been too busy making ice cream to plan years out for an unexpected visit from the president who, by all accounts, really just liked the ice cream.

  4. Edwin Leemans says

With the raised black fist is how it all started in South Africa. This was the symbol of the ANC, UDF and other so called liberation movements.
Now South Africa is in the hands of the communists. Only a few million whites are left, and each day is a struggle to survive. Our names changed, and we are now even called, “Afrikans”. The Boerevolk of South Africa, will stand up!

Wishing the conservatives of “Amerika”, the best of luck

And this fucking hooligan was supposed to be a “post-racial” president and heal racial tensions…..
…….He instructed his attorney general, eric holder (who’s black) to drop the charges against the New Black Panther Party for voter intimidation in Philadelphia, and to no longer prosecute black on white crimes that violate whites’ civil rights.

……If you disagree with any of Hussein Obama’s policies, heand his minions pull out the race card and all of a sudden you’re a racist (such as the members of the Tea Party movement).

…….And now the NAACP is getting into the act of calling Hussein Obama’s critics “racist”, and the silence from this regime is deafening.

The people who voted for this scumbag are either America-hating Marxists, or they are gullible, ignorant, and brain-dead! Either way, for the sake of America, please sterilize yourselves.

  6. TeabaggersRidiots says

Thanks for the chuckle. You teabaggers really are embarrassing yourself. I didn't think it was possible that you teahadists could find a new low to sink to, but your fake outrage over Obama's choice of ice cream locale really "takes the cake" [no pun intended]. I should feel sorry for you like I would feel sorry for the retard working at Pizza Hut, but I will continue to feel joy knowing that you unhinged teabaggers can be outraged over the most inane and banal issues. Enjoy!

  7. TeabaggersRracists says

Thanks for proving to everyone, yet again, that teabaggers are indeed racist mooks. Our President goes and gets ice cream, and the racist, hateful teabaggers see this as a race issue. Only an unapologetic racist could possibly turn this into a race issue. Thanks for stepping up to the plate, teabaggers, and embracing your racism for the world to see.

  8. Jasonq says

Ah, the poor, oppressed American white minority.

You know, there's pathetic, there's desperate, and there's just plain stupid. Somehow this post manages to ring all three bells. Maybe we should all chip in, get you some sort of prize. How's about one of those rock-band mirrors? Or a goldfish maybe?

Also, the voter-intimidation "scandal" is a bunch of bogus claptrap. Charges were dropped by the Bush Administration DOJ, acting right in line with the general attitude of that group, which was to ignore allegations of race-based voting irregularities (cf. voter caging in Ohio, Florida and a bunch of other places). Somehow *that* didn't make your radar.

Lastly, the New Black Panthers, though they are thugs, are laughable thugs. No one claimed to have been actually intimidated from voting, or in fact really intimidated at all.

  9. From BarHarbor says

As much as I hate Obama, I find this hard to even read. Mt. Desert Ice Cream is infact not a black power front, it is a tiny ice cream stand tacked onto a building.

  10. Daniele C. says

Thank you other Maine locals for speaking up. If Obama had gone to Red's ice cream in Cape Elizabeth, would this site have accused him of being Communist?!? If you want to discredit Obama or find things about his administration to criticize, at least make it something with some merit– and do your research first!

  11. Sane, intelligent person says

Whoever wrote this piece is just nuts.
This is a local ice cream store owned by a white woman with a white husband in a small mostly white town on an island in Maine.
    Get. a. grip.

  12. tiredoffkneejerk says

    This is hilarious,

"In fact, store owner Linda Parker admits to intentionally modeling her logo after that of the Black Power Movement, telling a reporter in 2008, “Everyone has seen enough cows in the hillside.”

That's not exactly saying that she intentionally modeled her logo after the Black Power Movement! That's a big stretch

  13. Townhill Maineiac says

omg!!! your kidding me right? THIS just proves not to believe everything you read. The other Bar Harbr locals are right…..the owners are white! This cracks me up! Thks for the laugh…..

  14. Marcus says

Or it could be, simply, that he patronized the best damn spot for ice cream in Bar Harbor. Some things just don't need to be so complicated. I am sure the president and all of his extremely capable and educated staff, researched the best Bar Harbor had to offer and the Presidential family had a blast. Relax people, it's just edging ice cream!

  15. drew says

And it was coconut ice cream not vanilla, get your facts right.

  16. Jim says

Hilarious. I live and work in Bar Harbor.. MDI ice cream is owned by white people, like pretty much all the businesses in town. They simply have the best ice cream. It's made locally and all of the ingredients are fresh. They have tons of unique flavors, and even though it's a little expensive.. it's far better than the competing tourist traps in town for ice cream. A few days before his arrival people came through town checking out all the restaurants and shops, finding which places were best, then reported back to him. I doubt he even had much say in it.

  17. TroubledAmerican says

Oddly if Bush had ice cream from an establishment with a KKK logo, that would be racist? Racist is as racist does.

  18. Dee says

This is a PATHETIC piece. I'm ashamed of any so-called "american" who would actually think such stupid thoughts. This is "calculated"? Are you retarded?

  19. Tommy says

Ok, the owner of the store is white.SFW? She’s probably some leftist shithead who hates her race for “oppressing” people of color and is sympathetic to the Black Power people.

  20. CDYogi says

What else would you expect from a racialist President?

One of his biggest accomplishments has been the stoking of class and race discord.

  21. HappySad says

fta: “Why President Obama chose to patronize an establishment with such a politically-sensitive logo at this time is uncertain. Some speculate that his handlers, or Obama himself, decided on the press shoot to send a subtle message to his core radical base.”

I don’t agree with that at all. Obama doesn’t need to send “subtle” messages to his base. His racism is overt and out in the open.

  22. MichiganBob says

You better believe this photo was planned. The (formerly) White House approves all these pics, they knew what that logo looks like and they wanted that pic to happen. It’s all part of Obama’s handlers’ plan to stoke up racial tensions before the elections, that’s the only damn thing Obama has going for him right now.

If this were Europe Obama would have gotten a vote of NO CONFIDENCE and he’d be out on his ass right now.

  23. Dee says

    MichiganBob,
Go move to a fundamentalist middle eastern country where people think like you do.

  24. Sane, intelligent person says

Go out an do some volunteer work in your communities, people. You have too much time on your hands. Bottom line, it’s not that complicated. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Let the guy have a well made ice cream cone in my town. He likes coconut, big deal.
The sign is different, it’s eye catching. Pure and simple. Nothing else to it.
Put your creativity to use- get involved in something that has a benefit to someone else- work on being positive, you’ll be happier with youself in the long run. This is a big planet and there are lots of people who don’t think like you- and that doesn’t mean they’re all out to get you.

  25. Greg says

You guys have it wrong. It’s all about Ice Cream power. You see, Mount Desert Ice Cream is planning dessertocide, cleansing Maine of all the other desert shops including but not limited to: Gelato shops, bakeries and other Ice Cream shops.

This is dessertism at it’s worst and we have to put a stop to it.

  26. Mama says

Besides being a ridiculous accusation, how about the fact that the this ice cream shop location was the only protected and private place to enjoy a treat with his family?

  27. Simon says

Looks like the Black Power logo to me…. what the hell was that ice cream shop owner thinking?

  28. Reginald says

She's probably some Leftist Marxist BITCH who broadcasts NPR in her lousy shop!

  29. Timbuck2 says

    Wow bad choice for Obama

  30. Sharron says

LOL he chose "coconut" ice cream, maybe he was sending a message with that – to say that he's a coconut, brown on the outside, white on the inside!

  31. Bar Harbor says

Are you kidding me?? Have you been to Bar Harbor? We hope a black person comes just so we can have some (Flavor)!! The ice cream shop is owned by a blonde women and the ice cream is the best!! He was just having an ice cream for goodness sake. Why try to mess with every little thing. ICE CREAM!!!!!

  32. The NIM Truth says

WOW from the looks of the comments it seems that Bar Harbor, Maine is a Leftist shithole. Someone drop a nuke on it and start all over again, please!

  33. Bar Harbor Resident says

There's a shop on Main Street that sells high-end knives, swords, and airsoft guns. Maybe you could go there to arm up? Leftist shithole my arse. The article and the above response were obviously written by folks who have never been to Bar Harbor themselves.

Shame on Obama for actually just trying to enjoy some ice cream! What a horrible person! 9_9

Like Freud said…sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

  34. Steve225 says

It's amazing how many Maineiacs have suddenly appeared on this site. Oddly, many from Bar Harbor. With so many TRP fans, maybe Snowe and Collins' days in the Senate are numbered.

  35. RBinMaine says

This is pure and pathetic nonsense. Aides choose the vacation stops, and anyone who knows the town knows it was chosen because it is outside the busy in-town traffic area so it wouldn't cause a traffic problem, and it is great home made ice cream. To think the sign had something to do with it is just plain foolish, and those who think that is a motive need to get a real life. What's next? Investigating his local hotel owners, or the local restaurants where he ate? How ridiculous. And to The NIM Truth, what a hateful and hurtful thing to say. You should hang your head in shame.

  36. Townhill Maineiac says

Just for the record, I'm not an Obama fan, I'm a Mt. Desert Ice Cream fan! Proud Republican here! Just wish the other Republicans on here would worry more about the important issues in the world than the fact that Obama ate ice cream at an establishment that has a "creative" advertising sign! Yay for the owner, look at all the free advertising she's getting.

Steve 225, when you live in Bar Harbor, it's hard not to see these sites. I happened to stumble across it on a Facebook post. Get over yourself!

  37. Brooke says

Anyone who thinks this "press shoot [was] to send a subtle message to his core radical base" Is CRAZY!! Totally and completely out of their minds (if they have any to begin with)! Mount Desert Ice Cream is just the best local ice cream in town and that's all there is to it. The owner started out at the local farmers market with her handmade ice cream from happy, healthy cows, which no other ice cream store in Bar Harbor can boast. Furthermore, the store is on the outskirts of town, rather than smack in the middle where the foot and car traffic is already unbearable at this time of year.

If Obama had been posed in front of Ben and Bill's ice cream where the summer staff is largely comprised of Eastern European girls the headline might read instead, "Obama visits immigrant Ice Cream"

What I take from this picture is that Obama is showing the world that he chooses fresh, local ice cream from cows not injected full of growth hormones and is a proud supporter of the small business.

  38. The NIM Truth says

"Townhill Maineiac" is probably some RINO who votes for Olympia Snowe.

  39. Bill Osgood says

It has nothing to do w/ the business. It certainly shows how ignorant the current president is to peoples fears. I am sure the ice cream had great TASTE. For a black president to stand in front of a black power sign anywhere is no different then a white president attending a clan rally…VERY, VERY POOR TASTE

  40. Bill Osgood says

Brooke,If the president is a proud supporter of local business why did he just tax them a trillion dollars ?

  41. RBinMaine says

That’s good NIM. Just keep on purging the remaining rational moderates out of your extremist right wing party. In the long term, you’ll shrink down to nothing but a band of crazy old pot bellied racist paranoid gun nuts who worship at the feet of whackos like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. By the way, the sales at that ice cream shop are no doubt going to go through the roof over this. So thanks. They are going to have their best season ever. HA HA

  42. Nelson Jenkins says

Why did a white woman make the logo of her business look like the Black Power symbol?

  43. Theodore says

I definitely see the logo looks like Black Power. People here are saying the woman who runs the business is white but that doesn’t matter, she’s definitely a Leftist and has sympathies with the Black Power movement. She probably thinks white people are responsible for all the sins of the world and hates the color of skin.

  44. RBinMaine says

Bill, keep swallowing your right wing Kool Aid. Taxes have been reduced on 95% of families. It has been in a few papers. And middle class cuts will be extended. Of course the right wing has no problem shifting taxes from the rich to the middle and working classes, piling up mountains of debt with tax breaks for millionaires and subsidies for big oil, etc., all unpaid, trillions for war unpaid, hundreds of billions for Medicare D undpaid, and on and on. What hypocrisy.

  45. Bill Osgood says

Rb I said businesses were taxed you said families…stop snorting the Kool Aid. Create a business to compete in the world, hire employees and get back to me

  46. BlackPowerIceCream says

Congratulations, this is the stupidest nontroversy I've seen on the intertubes all week – and that's saying a lot.

  47. Jemerson says

    HAH…

Obama ordered white ice cream without nuts. Probably thought Sherrodgate had used them all up.

  48. Snippy W Shrub says

    How very republican.

  49. Dennis also says

Silly. There aren’t any black people in Maine.

  50. MissKG says

This is almost as scary as Rachel Ray’s jihadist scarf.
