Hassan Nemazee
Hassan Nemazee, an Iranian-American businessman who raised money for the political campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to defrauding American banks out of US$ 292 million.
“You know exactly what you have done,” US District Judge Sidney Stein told Nemazee as he handed down the sentence. “I don’t think there is any fooling yourself by yourself. You have done a great deal of good in your life [and yet] this crime is breathtaking in its brazenness and its scope.”
In addition to the 12-year prison term, Nemazee has also been ordered to pay back Bank of America Corp, Citigroup Inc and HSBC Holdings Plc the US $292.2 million he stole from them.
Nemazee, who was one the top “bundlers” of US President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, said he needed the money to pay off debts from hedge fund and property investments gone bad.
Typically, Nemazee donated more than US $100,000 annually to Democrats including Clinton, now US Secretary of State.
