The Somali branch of Al Queda, Al-Shabaab, has taken credit for two Uganada suicide bombings of World Cup football fans that killed at least 70 people.
The explosions ripped through two Kampala restaurants where fans had gathered to watch the final game in the World Cup on Sunday.
Before anyone took credit for the bombings, Sheikh Yusuf Isse, al-Shabaab commander in Mogadishu, praised the attacks.
“Uganda is a major infidel country supporting the so-called government of Somalia,” Sheikh Yusuf Isse said. “We know Uganda is against Islam and so we are very happy at what has happened in Kampala. That is the best news we ever heard.”
The Voice of America reports that al-Shabab’s spokesman Ali Mohamud Rage said the group carried out the attacks because Uganda has not taken its troops out of Somalia.
Uganda army spokesman Felix Kulayigye told reporters on Sunday evening that inspectors had identified a severed head from one of the suicide bombers as belonging to a Somali national, indicating Al-Shabaab.
An American aid worker was among those killed in the Sunday bombings. US President Barack Obama promised Uganda the help in finding those responsible for the attacks.
