The ex-husband of deported Russian spy Anna Chapman says her father was a former KGB member and worked for the Russian government in Zimbabwe.
Brit Alex Chapman, the ex-husband of Anna Chapman, nee Kushenko, tells the UK Telegraph that her father, Vasily Kushenko, was a former KGB agent who served as a diplomat in the Russian Embassy in Harare.
“Anna told me he worked as a diplomat for the Russian government. It was only much later that she told me he had been a KGB agent,” Alex said.
Kushenko now works in the Kremlin, according to the UK Telegraph.
Alex described the Kushenko home in Zimbabwe as being “guarded by local men.”

“He [Vasily] always seemed to have a lot more security than the other diplomats. He had a Land Rover with blacked out windows and there was always one car in front of it and one car behind,” Alex said.
Alex said his father-in-law was suspicious of him and only opened up to him when drinking beer and camping in the bush near Bulawayo.
When Alex and Anna wed in 2002, Vasily took it upon himself to set up a six-week honeymoon in Zimbabwe, where the two stayed at 5-star hotels, flew over Victoria Falls, went skydiving and on safari in the bush.
In a separate interview with UK tabloid News of the World, Alex said Vasily got him a full Russian visa by “bending the rules.”

The couple rented a flat in Stoke Newington, north London. Vasily introduced the couple to millionaire South African and vodka import-exporter Ken Sharpe, who is believed to have British, Zimbabwean, and South African passports. Sharpe set up a charity called Southern Union with the couple, enabling Zimbabwean expats to wire money back home at competitive exchange rates. The charity reportedly sent “gargantuan” amounts of British pounds to Zimbabwe.
Sharpe financed the company and took a commission on the transfers.
Alex also told News of the World that he found a surprising side to his new bride shortly after settling down. “She was quite right wing,” Alex said. “She said the UK was far too relaxed, especially about immigration. She would tell me, ‘It wouldn’t happen in Russia’.”
The two divorced four years later in 2006. Alex says Anna changed from having a “care-free”, bohemian lifestyle to being obsessed with America and making money. She began sneaking off to secret meetings with Russian friends, Alex said.
A month before the couple divorced, Sharped pushed Alex Chapman out of Southern Union.
Anna then moved to New York City in 2007.
Alex Chapman told the UK Telegraph that he “wasn’t surprised” when MI5 agents told him his ex-wife had been arrested on espionage charges and questioned their relationship.
“I have not heard from MI5,” Sharpe told the UK Telegraph. “Southern Union in the UK was not my company.”
MI5 is also investigating Ken Sharpe for possible ties to Russian espionage.
