Arizona Senator John McCain has added his voice to the torrent of disapproval triggered by RNC Chairman Michael Steele‘s comments that the war in Afghanistan is a “lost cause.”
Steele “is going to have to assess as to whether he can still lead the Republican Party as chairman of the Republican National Committee and make an appropriate decision,” the Republican McCain said in a Sunday appearance on ABC’s This Week.
Other prominent politicians also added their condemnation on Sunday morning political talk shows.
Republican Senator from North Carolina, Lindsay Graham said on Face the Nation that Steele’s statement was an “uninformed, unnecessary, unwise, untimely comment.”
“This is not President Obama’s war; this is America’s war,” Graham said.
Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, an independent who campaigned for John McCain during the 2008 election, called Steele’s comments “unfortunate.”
Both Graham and Lieberman stopped short in calling for Steele’s resignation.
William Kristol, who penned an open call for Steele to resign in his Weekly Standard, said on FOX News Sunday that the embattled RNC Chairman personally contacted him to explain his comments.
Ultimately, Steele “didn’t persuade me, actually, that it wouldn’t be better for Republican Party and for the country if he stepped down as Republican chairman,” Kristol said.
