World Cup Trophies Stolen In South Africa

Not a suspect: Nelson Mandela holds a World Cup trophy

South African police have arrested a British journalist for allegedly concocting a conspiracy that nabbed seven World Cup football replica trophies.

Fifa confirmed the theft, putting the value of each trophy at US $2,580 (£1700).

“Indeed the incident did take place - but I have to say there were no signs of break-in and police are investigating the matter,” Fifa spokeman Nicolas Maingot said.

South African police chief Bheki Cele said the unnamed British journalist persuaded fan Pavlos Joseph to trespass into the England team dressing room. The ensuing chaos created enough of a disturbance for the trophies to be snatched.

Police are still investigating CCTV cameras and other evidence.

An American tourist was shot in a robbery in Sandton, just after stepping off the Gautrain to start his holiday in South Africa.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Leon Engelbrecht, from the police’s World Cup National Joint Operations Centre, said 35-year-old David Bueche was assaulted and shot in the arm, after getting off the Gautrain at the Marlboro station on Wednesday night just after 9pm.
“He was walking in Northway Street from the Gautrain station to a backpackers lodge,” said Engelbrecht. “He was assaulted, shot and robbed by four men in an unknown vehicle.”
Bueche had just arrived in the country for holiday at the OR Tambo Airport on Wednesday night, and took the Gautrain to the Marlboro station.
He was taken to the Sunninghill Clinic and was in a stable condition.
“He is here on holiday and not for the World Cup,” said Engelbrecht.

What’s new? An airport tracker saw him get on the Gautrain at Jan Smuts Airport and sent his picture via cellphone to his buddies in Sandton. Pity the white cellphone designers didn’t make it black proof.

no, robbers were just driving by and saw someone walking on the side of the road, and jumped him.

They could've given the winning teams some blood diamonds instead. They're easily attained.

Besides, in the near future, China will destroy anything and everything on that continent anyway. No point in leaving anything of value behind.
