The family of alleged Russian spy Vicky Pelaez claim she is being targeted for her leftist ideals and want the Peruvian government help defend her in court.
“I begged, and asked the president that because she is a Peruvian citizen, he should try through the foreign ministry to see how he can help her,” said Angelica Ocampo, mother of alleged spy Vicky Pelaez.
Vicky Pelaez worked for El Diario newspaper in New York City, one of the largest Spanish-language dailies in America. She used her position there to write articles critical of American policy in Latin America and often supported far-left movments in her pieces.
Pelaez was kidnapped in 1984 by the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) but managed to get an interview with her captors. The cameraman who videotaped the interview claims Pelaez was a willing accomplice to the kidnapping.
Pelaez’s husband, photographer Juan Lazaro, shares his wife’s political beliefs and published an article praising the Shining Path guerillas in a European Leftist journal back in 1990.
Although Lazaro claims to have been born in Uruguay, the FBI has videotape of him saying he was raised in the Soviet Union.
The federal complaint against Pelaez states an FBI agent videotaped her contacting a Russian spy official in Latin America back in 2000.
The couple’s oldest son, 38-year old architect Waldo Mariscal, says the charges are “all inflated little pieces turned into a mosaic of unbelievable things,”

Targeted for her leftist beliefs??? That won’t fly these days. She should try saying that she was targeted for attending tea parties!
Don't forget the motto of all liberals:
Victims by any means necessary.
