Lebanese Army Intelligence has arrested a Mossad agent who had access to a “most significant segment” of one of the only two mobile networks in Lebanon during the 2006 war with Israel.
The Los Angeles Times reports 56-year-old “Charbel Q.” has admitted to working for Israeli secret service since 1996. He was working for the Alpha Company maintaining network stations and is believed to have planted listening devices that allowed Israel to secretly listen in on phone conversations in the mobile network.
“Charbel Q.” was responsible for a section of the company called BTS, where all communications initially passes through. It controlled more than 650 sending stations in the Lebanese regions and maintains their connections to each other.
The Mossad agent allowed Israel to monitor the location of people on the network, as well as get the names, numbers, addresses, and biographies of customers.
It is believed Israel was tracking the whereabouts of Hamas members.
Army Intelligence also confiscated a computer and documents belonging to “Charbel Q.” during June 25 raid on the Alpha Company building, in addition to other communications equipment found on him.
Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that Lebanon has been actively pursuing Israeli spies in its country since April 2009. More than 70 people have been arrested and 20 formally charged, including a retired brigadier general of the General Security directorate.
A Palestinian refugee was also arrested Friday and charged with espionage.
This is not the first Mossad agent caught at Alpha Company, according to Palestine Think Tank. Anneke Potter, who served as executive director of the “Alpha” Company, fled Lebanon in 2007 after a warrant for her arrest was issued.
Hamas has called for the death penalty for anyone convicted of spying for Israel.
