Ten people were arrested Sunday in American suburban towns and charged with working as spies for the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, otherwise known as the SVR.
An eleventh alleged spy was arrested in Cyprus Tuesday and released on bail. The Russians lived in American cities and suburbs from Seattle, Washington to New York, living everyday lives under assumed names. Their secret lives included gathering intelligence, penetrate American “policy making circles” and recruit new agents.
An intercepted message from Moscow to the agents read, “You were sent to USA for long-term service trip. Your education, bank accounts, car, house etc. – all these serve one goal: fulfill your main mission, i.e. to search and develop ties in policymaking circles in US and sent intels.”
In addition to using Cold War espionage tactics such as invisible ink to get their intelligence back to Moscow, some of the alleged spies are charged with using forged passports, an echo of the unfolding Mossad hit of a Hamas militant in Dubai. British and Irish officials are investigating the charges.
One of the alleged spies lived in suburban Yonkers, New York and worked for the Spanish-language New York City daily El Diario.
Each of the 10 arrested Sunday were charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison on conviction.
Nine of the defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering, which carries a maximum 20 years in prison on conviction.
The arrests come after a 7-year investigation into the ring, dubbed “The Illegals Program” by the FBI. It also comes at an inopportune time for US president Barack Obama, who has worked to “reset” relations with Russia and was photographed eating a hamburger with Russian president Dmitri Medvedev just a few days earlier.
The Russian Foreign Service has reacted angrily to the arrested, calling them “unseemly” and “groundless.” Russian foreign ministry official Andrei Nesternko denounced the US State Department for acting “in the spirit of the Cold War.”

Alley Oop your days on this site is now numbered! You know what you did, and you’ll pay the price with banishment!
Gol ahead. Make my day!!
Apparently they were supposed to be working on long-term penetration of the US intelligence services. Makes me wonder why. Maybe it’s telling that the Russian communists think they will still need spies over here in the future. Maybe they know something we don’t.
Read ” The Soviet Strategy for the conquest of Southern Africa”. The book shows how the Russians moved in and influenced all the countries in the Southern African region with propoganda etc. like the woman in the story above, to eventually create new governments that they could have a strong influence over. They succeeded, they eventually got their main target toppled, South Africa. They have been working on the US for many many years, but now it will be easier with Obama in office and the state that the country is currently in.
