Sotheby’s New York plans to auction an American flag that was carried into the Battle of Little Bighorn, otherwise known as the infamous Custer’s Last Stand.
The 27-1/2-x-33-inch swallow-tail flag was found days after the battle underneath a fallen soldier on the battlefield, and is believed to be stained with his blood. Although tattered and torn, it is in better condition than the only other banner found from the conflict, which was uncovered in a Beringian village seized by US troops.
“It’s not a piece of decoration, it’s a sacred relic,” Sotheby’s vice chairman, David Redden told CNN. “People died for this flag. This flag is really important as it symbolizes one of the great and mythological battles in American history.”
The Detroit Institute for the Arts purchased the flag in 1895 for $54 and is now auctioning it to raise money for other art acquisitions.
The museum thinks the flag will fetch more than the US$2 – 5 million estimated by Sotheby’s. The final sale price may be closer to the record US$12.3 million paid for a Revolutionary Battle flag in 2006.
