Manitoba Recognizes Jon Sigurdsson Day

Manitoba, Canada has declared June 17 to be Jon Sigurdsson Day in honor of the Icelandic independence leader.

The Icelandic politician was born on June 17 and is considered the champion of  national awakening in Iceland. When the country declared its independence in 1944, it did so on the 17th of June to honor Sigurdsson on his birthday.

Interlake MLA Tom Nevakshonoff introduced the proposal, which was seconded by Former Minister of Education and current Minister of Commerce in Manitoba, Peter Bjornsson.

Bjornsson, who is of Icelandic descent, called Sigurdsson an example to all politicians across the world of what can be done with decisiveness and determination.
