New York City Councilman Charles Barron has denounced calls to ban vuvuzelas from the 2010 World Cup Games as something “only racists” would do.
The Brooklyn Democrat and former Black Panther was first surprised at the question when asked by The New York Daily News, but said the following when he heard that the complaints about the droning one-note horns were coming from Western soccer fans and media:
“Absolutely it’s racist, because that [vuvuzelas] is something that comes out of our culture, it’s in our country South Africa, and we have a right [to blow the vuvuzela]. And you have to adopt to our culture and the tradition of country that’s hosting the Games. Absolutely it’s racist and outrageous. Let them blow!”
Barron is reportedly planning a bid for New York governor under his newly-formed and all-Black Freedom Party.
