Iceland To Exhume Bobby Fischer

The Icelandic Supreme Court has ruled that chess master Bobby Fischer will be exhumed to settle an ongoing paternity suit.

The Wednesday ruling overturns a previous decision made by the District Court of Reykjavik, which turned down a request made by Marilyn Young, a Filipina woman who claims she had a love child with Fischer.

Young backs up her paternity claim with pictures and postcards sent by Fischer that are addressed to 9-year-old Jinky and signed “Daddy.”  She also says Fischer gave her money in 2006 and 2007 to support the girl, and wants DNA tests done to prove he is the biological father in order to collect part of the chess master’s US $2 million estate.

“At this point we are just trying to establish this,” said lawyer Thordur Bogason, who is representing Young. “And if she is confirmed as the daughter of Bobby Fischer, then by Icelandic law she is his legal heir.”

In addition to Jinky, there are three other parties seeking a part of Fischer’s estate; his Japanese wife, two American nephews and the US government, which is looking to collect back taxes. Fischer left no will when he died.

Fischer put Iceland on the international map with his 1972 defeat of Soviet Grandmaster Borris Spassky in Reykjavik, a Cold War victory that quickly turned the American into a recluse. Fischer became a fugitive after playing Spassky in a 1992 rematch in Yugoslavia, which at the time was under a United Nations embargo that included sanctions on sporting events.

After living on the run in Asia, Fischer drew international outrage for his anti-Semitic statements after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He was later arrested and applied for Icelandic citizenship to escape extradition to America, which he won in 2005. He died in January 2008 and is buried at the cemetery of Laugardaelir Church in southern Iceland.
