The two Black farm workers accused of savagely murdering AWB leader Eugene Terre’Blanche have claimed they acted in self defense during a bail hearing at the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court Thursday.
The lawyer representing 27-year-old Chris Mahlangu, Puna Moroko, told the court that Terre’Blanche attacked his client and a 16-year-old boy, also accused in case, with a panga (machete). Moroko claims his client acted in self defense.
A panga
A panga was found lying across Terre’Blanche’s chest, but the post-mortem report showed it was not used in the attack, Moroko said.
“When the deceased was confronted about wages, he used it [the panga] to attack the accused. The accused acted in self defense and they left the panga on him without using it,” Moroko told the court.
Moroko also claims the AWB leader carried the weapon with him every where he went.
Mahlangu has been charged with crimen injuria because Terre’Blanche was found with his pants open and pulled down.
Moroko told the court that “most of the time after drinking, [Terre'Blanche] would take off his pants and pull out his briefs and put his pants back on because of the heat.” The lawyer also said that Terre’Blanche’s underpants were hanging on the headboard of the bed when the confrontation began.

In cross-examining investigating officer Captain Tsietsi Mano, Moroko asked why Terre’Blanche was found dead with his trousers pulled halfway down. Mano did not reply.
Mano sharply contradicted Moroko’s defense, telling the court that Terre’Blanche was asleep when the attack began. Forensics show he died immediately from forceful blows to the head and chest. One blow was so hard it broke the AWB leader’s jaw, a bone piercing his tongue. His liver was also ruptured, Mano said.
Mano also testified that the two accused planned to kill Terre’Blanche. He believes it was due to a wage dispute.
He also said that the accused entered the house though a window, killed Terre’Blanche and left through the kitchen door.

Moroko claimed his client should get bail because he is not a Zimbabwe national, despite published reports and not a flight risk.
The 16-year-old boy also accused of murdering Terre’Blanche made a brief appearance in court. He was given a copy of the charges against him, which included housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery with aggravated circumstances, murder and attempted robbery. Crimen injuria was not included in the indictment given to the minor.
It is expected that Mahlangu and the boy will stand trial in the Ventersdorp Circuit Court from November 22 until November 27.
“I don’t know why they are not moving it to Potchefstroom. I think they want to impress people,” Moroko told reporters.

That picture was taken at ETB’s farm shortly after his murder. Someone put on “Scream” mask and drove up to the farm on a motorcycle, strode past the gathering crowd of mourners and media, and placed it there. If you look carefully it reads “Ethnic Cleansing” on the top and “Afikaner Genocide” on the bottom.
