The Chinese Foreign Ministry is accusing North Korea of killing three of its citizens and injuring a fourth in an incident that occurred on June 4.
The Chinese nationals “were suspected of illegally crossing the border to trade,” ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.
China is the isolated Communist dictatorship’s only ally in the region and supports it with grain, energy and other desperately-needed resources. The border between the two countries is porous, with many people traveling across it for trade and other reasons.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il recently paid China a rare personal visit and returned willing to resume stalled nuclear disarmament talks.
The shooting is being investigated by both countries.
