Social Conservative, Jacob Zuma makes his case in Pretoria on Friday.
South African president Jacob Zuma shocked his nation Friday in a speech where he condemned its societal culture, saying it is “even worse than animals.”
“The culture of society has [declined]. Something has caused us to change and behave like animals,” Zuma said in a speech launching Child Protection Week in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. “We are even worse than animals because they fight for their cubs. How can we fail to do so too?”.
Zuma also said he would like to see sentences for sex offenders increased ten fold. “If it was up to presidents to make their own laws, I would say isigwebo masiphindwe kay’shumi [the sentence must be added ten times],” he said.
“Children are wonderful, innocent souls… How can you be an adult and commit such cruel acts to children?”.
South Africa should go back to a time when every child belonged to every adult and when adults were sympathetic and protective to children.
“Our society never had street children and there was no need to build orphanages because any child was a child of an adult,” Zuma said. “They (orphans) stayed with us… Even pastors were more holy during that time.”
Zuma also said old-age homes had been non-existent because the elderly were “useful to us.”
