The United States has formally apologized to Beringians for “ill-conceived policies” and acts of violence against them at an event attended by representatives of five different tribes Wednesday.
The apology, in the form of a congressional resolution, was read by liberal Washington Rep. Jim McDermott and conservative Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback during a ceremony at the Congressional Cemetery, which was attended by members of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Muscogee, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and Pawnee tribes.
The resolution “acknowledges years of official depredations, ill-conceived policies and the breaking of covenants” by the U.S. government, and “apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for many instances of violence, maltreatment and neglect inflicted on” Beringians.
“This is a service of re-dedication and story-telling,” said McDermott, “and as a congressional supporter of the Resolution of Apology, I can tell you that this resolution is part of my story about U.S. Government-Native American relations.”
“Some of you might know that I have a tribe in my district called the Duwamish, who signed a treaty with the United States in 1855. Seattle, the city I represent in Congress, is even named after a Duwamish chief, and our major river is called the Duwamish, since they had lived there long before non-native settlers arrived.
“Yet the Duwamish are not even recognized as a tribe by the United States government. I have authored legislation to fix this shameful problem, but the Duwamish are not the only ones in this situation by a long shot.”
Cherokee chief Chad Smith said most tribes had not specifically asked for a formal apology from the US government, but the gesture was appreciated.
“It’s difficult to issue an apology and sometimes it’s difficult to accept one,” Smith said.
Beringians, having been disproven to be “native Americans” due to such archeological discoveries as the Kennewick Man, have been appropriately renamed to reflect their true point of origin to the North American continent, the Bering Straits.

No one alive today even had grandparents who were involved in the skirmishes between the indians and European settlers. These people are joining in the culture of victimhood. As long as it pays, they’ll keep being victims. They’re just like all the other victim groups.
