Rand Paul Wins KY Primary

Rand Paul

Tea Party star Rand Paul has defeated GOP establishment candidate Trey Grayson for the Republican Senate primary in Kentucky, a win that illustrates the strength of the grass-roots political movement.

“I have a message, a message from the Tea Party, a message that is loud and clear and does not mince words: We’ve come to take our government back,” Paul said to cheers at his acceptance speech.

Paul is the son of Texas congressman Ron Paul, the maverick Republican whose limited-government message inspired the creation of the Tea Party movement. He also won an early endorsement of former GOP Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin earlier this year.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Palin called Paul’s victory “a wake up call for the country.”

“This is a real time of awakening for America,” Palin said. “We have an opportunity to not embrace the status quo but to shake things up.”

With 85 percent of the Kentucky precincts reporting, Paul won 59 percent of the vote, compared to 36 percent for Grayson.

Grayson was recruited to the race by Kentucky’s dominant Republican, US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
