Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Spectre has lost his primary bid to run for a 6th term after switching from Republican to Democrat in April 2009.
With 79-percent of precincts reporting, Spectre got 47-percent, while his challenger, Congressman Joe Sestak, won 53-percent.
In his speech accepting defeat, Spectre congratulated Sestak and he would call him to say, “I think it’s vital to keep this seat in the Democratic Party and I will support him.”
Sestak told supporters “This is what Democracy looks like,” in his acceptance speech. “A win for the people over the establishment, over the status quo, even over Washington, D.C.”
Spectre’s defeat is also being viewed as a loss for Barack Obama, who warmly welcomed the Senator when he switched over to the Democrat Party last year. The president also campaigned for Spectre, appearing at a rally and on radio and television ads for him.
Sestak is now set to face Republican Pat Toomey in the November election.
