South African Minister of Agriculture Tina Joemat-Petterson has stood up farmers union TAU/SA for a pre-scheduled meeting, opting to be out of the country instead.
This marks the second time in a row Joemat-Petterson has set up a meeting with TAU/SA and then gone out of the country without notifying the union.
Joemat-Petterson’s actions “gives us the idea that she should rather have the portfolio of Foreign Affairs than that of Agriculture,” said TAU/SA president Ben Marais. “We simply have no ear for ours problems and also not for our constructive suggestions.”
The union traveled “at great expense” to the Pretoria meeting, only to find out the minister was traveling abroad, said Marais.
TAU/SA has published an open letter to South Africa Jacob Zuma regarding the increase in plaasmorde attacks on farmers since ANCYL leader Julius Malema began singing “Kill the Boer” at public rallies.
Zuma has yet to respond.
The union says it will give Zuma a full two weeks and then will make its plans known if he does not respond.
