The police officer who squashed rumors that a used condom was found at the murder scene of AWB leader Eugene Terreblanche has been suddenly taken off the case without explanation.
North West police spokeswoman Adele Myburgh told the South African Press Association (Sapa) about her removal when the agency contacted her for updates on the murder inquiry.
Myburgh said she would not give any further media comment about the case as part of an “internal” process, which she said, “I respect.”
The police spokeswoman was quick to blast a weekend report published in South African tabloid The Saturday Star that a used condom was found at the Terreblanche murder scene as “a lie.”
“There was no condom found on the scene of the late Mr Eugene Terre’Blanche. I’m prepared to put my neck in a guillotine and you can have a go at it if I have been lying,” Myburgh had told Sapa on Saturday.
The Saturday Star was quick to recant its story, published with rumor and innuendo of a gay sex angle. While the Star quickly recanted its story after Myburgh said it was a lie, rumors in the article were reprinted as fact in several other more respectable broadsheets, including The Mail and Guardian and eventually The New York Times.
