Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has won the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, beating CPAC favorite Ron Paul by one vote.
Conservatives attending the conference were asked who they would vote for if the Republican primary were held today.
Percentage-wise, the two men tied for first place, with each winning 24% of the vote. Out of the 1,806 votes cast, Romney got 439 votes and Paul got 438.
Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich essentially tied for third with 18% of the vote each. But Palin did get more votes than Gingrich, 330 – 321.
The full list of candidates offered were Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee Newt Gingrich, Gary Johnson, Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Pence, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.
Both Romney and Paul spent money to pull supporters in to vote for the poll. Paul’s characteristically college-age and boisterous followers were a sharp contrast to Romney’s somber, middle-aged voters.
In his address to the SLRC, Paul said “the American people have awoken.”
“The reason why the American people have awoken … is because the country is broke and the people in Washington won’t admit it.”
