During a visit to an Afrikaaner-shantytown last Tuesday, South African president Jacob Zuma vowed government resources will be made available to all, based on need and not race.
“Poverty knows no color, so as our services as government,” Zuma said to the people of Bethlehem, an impoverished all-White, Afrikaans-speaking community located on the outskirts of the South African capitol Pretoria.
Zuma last visited Bethlehem in July 2008 while running for president. “Today I came to you as the president of the republic, and I come with the government machinery to ensure that your needs are taken care of,” he said.
Afrikaner trade union Solidarity welcomed the visit, but noted that such government programs as Affirmative Action have sidelined Whites not only in the private sector but when it comes to getting government services.
“White communities are not prioritized when it comes to government social services. It is regarded as politically incorrect to speak of white poverty,” said Dirk Hermann, chairman of the union’s social program.
Solidarity presented Zuma with a government study which found that impoverished Afrikaner communities did not benefit from the government poverty relief programs.
According to the study, those interviewed said they believed there was no point for applying for welfare grants because they feared they would be rejected on the grounds of skin color.
