Ron Paul Wins CPAC Presidential Straw Poll

Ron Paul wows 'em at CPAC

Ron Paul has won the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll, a stunning upset victory for the Texas Congressman derided by mainstream Republicans during the 2008 US Presidential election.

Paul got 31% of the vote. Mitt Romney, who won the poll for the last three years, came in second with 22%. Former GOP Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin came in a distant third with 7%.

The straw poll gives an early window into who conservative activists believe should be the next GOP nominee.

“It is clear that Paul brought a lot of people” to CPAC, said Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, who ran the straw poll.

Fabrizio said 2,395 of a reported 10,000 attendees voted. It was the most votes in the history of CPAC — about 40% higher than last year, he said.

Mainstream Republicans and neo-cons derided the Texas libertarian as a “kook” during the 2008 US Presidential election for his railing against the Federal Reserve, criticism of Bush Administration civil rights abuses, and the War in Iraq.

Paul invigorated conference goers with his speech to the convention with a scathing indictment of Washington lawmakers for the economic crisis.

“Debt is the monster,” Paul said, condemning federal borrowing to support government spending. “Debt is what will eat us up, and that’s why our economy is on the brink.”

Have you ever heard with age comes wisdom. I used to think that when I was a young man in my 20's that I knew it all, boy was I wrong. 27 yrs more learning than I have Ron Paul gets my vote any day not matter what party he falls in. He said in 1988 if we keep going the way we are we will go broke I think we have passed that. The American people must be idiots to want to vote Obama back in after putting a 1.3 trillion dollar amount onto the already high deficit. And now it will only go up from there if he stays in office.
