Former US President Bill Clinton was rushed to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan with chest pains, reports ABC News.
ABC News’ chief political correspondent George Stephanopoulos reported that sources said he was taken to the hospital “likely for a stent procedure.” A press release from a Clinton spokesman confirmed the report, clarifying that the former president had two stents in one of his coronary arteries.
Sources on Capitol Hill tell ABC News that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was seen leaving the Oval Office a short time ago and did not seem “too concerned” or “in a rush.”
State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Sec. Clinton is supposed to leave for an overseas trip to Qatar and Saudi Arabia Friday.
An official told ABC News that Clinton’s ailment seems more like “discomfort [....] something wasn’t right” rather than a health “crisis.”
A friend of the former president’s said that he had been suffering from a cold and had been warn out from his recent trip to Haiti.
Clinton underwent a quadruple coronary artery bypass operation at the same hospital in September 2004, after experiencing mild chest pain and shortness of breath days before.
Clinton did not have a heart attack at that time, but what appeared to be unstable angina, which is a muscle pain that indicates the heart may be starved of oxygen. In other words, he did not sustain heart damage back then, although indicated a developing health problem.
There was a subsequent operation about four months later to correct a complication, but all indications are he tolerated the procedure well.
