The worldwide economic downturn has spurred a baby boom in the Nordic countries of Iceland and Sweden, where births in 2009 were the largest seen there in decades.
In Iceland, where they are still picking through the embers of the banking crash of 2008, the country’s social welfare system is being credited for the increase of births. “Parents get nine months of leave when they have a baby” there, explains Helga Gottfreidsdóttir, professor of midwifery at the University of Iceland. “Three months is for the mother, three months is for the father, and three months can be taken by either the mother or the father.” In addition, the state will pay an out-of-work Icelander for up to six months of child care.
That generous system has seen an increase of 2.09 births-per-woman to 2.14 (compared with 1.95 in Britain, and 2.02 in France). But, given that Iceland is a tiny country that boasts just 320,000 people, the rise only amounted to a hard figure of 275 actual births.
In Sweden, which also has a very generous social welfare system for parents, the country’s fertility rate rose to 1.91 children born per woman in 2008, according to figures from Statistics Sweden (SCB).
A government-funded fertility treatment program in Sweden also seems to be bearing fruit, where 17 percent of all twins and 40 percent of all triplets born in 2004 were a result of the effort.

It is amazing to watch as Sweden commits national and ethnic suicide.Their goverment has completely betrayed them.I wonder if the people there are ever gonna wake up and question why they are giving their country over to people who publicly say they are gonna take it.And then th police arrest anybody who speaks out about it on anti-hate speech laws.They don't even have freedom of speech.The more i read about Sweden the more upsetting it becomes.
