It’s supposed to be keep your eye on the ball. The idea is to get a small ball into a little cup from what seems to be miles away. When it comes to birdies and bogies, I don’t know the difference; but I do know that a whole lot of people became interested in the sport of golf when Tiger Woods entered the picture.
Tiger came onto the scene and you would think a new game was invented. But he took his eye off the ball. The eye of this Tiger does not see, does not see that he was the whole team. In baseball, you need 9 men; who’s at first, what’s on second, I don’t know – third base. Tiger is all 9 men. The whole game revolves around one player. Winner take all. No one else to share the prize with.
Tiger became superman. Bigger than one player among many. Bigger than big. All of those endorsements. Can you picture – going to get the mail out of the mailbox and an avalanche of checks comes pouring out. Open up the mailbox and an avalanche of checks. Not a bad way to earn a living. Big name companies used him in their advertisements; his picture, his face. He uses a certain razor, he wears certain shoes. An accounting consulting company; what does he know about accounting, about consulting. Bigger than big.
Dubai stopped with the Tiger Woods Golf Course. For the moment they ran out of money, so they say. Pumping oil generates fresh dollars. But what really is intriguing about a golf course in Dubai is that it is a desert; sand as far as the eye can see. Dubai was planning on 5 million square feet of locally grown grass. Locally grown. Not imported. Locally grown grass is a major project. There needs to be irrigation; there needs to be compatibility; the grass has to be planted on top of the desert sand and it has to succeed in continuously growing so that it has to be manicured. It has to grow and then you have to cut the grass. Beautiful grass. A beautiful golf course. The trees they were going to import; 30,000 full-grown trees, imported trees. They have to import the trees. Trees don’t grow in the desert. Another major project. All of this under the name of Tiger Woods; the auspices of naming it after him. They were planning 100 villas, 75 mansions, and 22 palaces in addition to a swanky hotel. Supposedly, Tiger Woods was designing the golf course, not just giving his name to it. Where did he study engineering and design, I’d like to know.
With all this money he goes from man to superman. But it appears that he just wanted to be your common, ordinary, run-of-the mill, everyday, average, plain, just like everybody else guy. His eye wondered to common, ordinary, run-of-the mill, everyday, average, bleached blondes. Without their names listed under their photos, they all look alike. Apparently there is more to the story than just a listing of blondes. There are assets; assets too numerous to discuss. Homes. Homes here, there, and everywhere. He is the empire.
Special. Special is gone. Tiger was Special. Now he’s not.
There was What Makes Sammy Run?, a book about a guy who made it to the top. He had the talent, he had the drive, he had the ability, he had the ambition. He ran with everything he had. But his big fear was someone new would come along. Someone new would replace him. He didn’t have an exclusive on talent and ability. Keep in mind everything stopped in the world of golf when Tiger needed his knee operation. Maybe the next book to explore is “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”.
It strikes me as funny that when athletes get older and go into retirement, they usually take up golf. Tiger is young so he can’t retire. What is he supposed to take up? He had it MADE. All he had to do was bask in the glory. But he just wanted to be common, ordinary, everyday, run-of-the-mill. No differentiation between him and some other guy. Nothing special.
Somebody new comes along. Somebody with talent, ability, drive, ambition.
Somebody who has an appreciation for the admiration that the public bestows on their heroes; their idols.
Somebody new always comes along.
Time moves on.
There’s somebody out there who is practicing, practicing and then practicing some more.
Keep your eye on the ball.

That´s a quite funny photo :-)
Very eloquently written, as always.
We all sin and fall short of the Glory of God. The only difference between Tiger Woods and the rest of us is because he is a celebrity Adultery suddenly seems like News!
Tiger Woods does not deserve a good, decent wife like Elin Nordegren or his beautiful children. He is shameless and has no moral principles. He has deceived, betrayed and humiliated his family in front of the world. Elin should receive no less than half of Tiger’s fortune since he earned millions from sponsors and fans projecting a false image of integrity as a devoted husband and family man. Elin Nordegren is young and beautiful and someday she will find a good and decent man to love, honor and respect her and the children.
