Joburg: South Africa’s Drunk Driving Capitol

johannesburg_MapJohannesburg has been dubbed South Africa’s drunk driving capitol after nearly a third of DUI arrests occurred there over the holiday season.

Out of the 3,569 arrests made over the Christmas-New Year period, 1,081 were done in Johannesburg. The number is slightly higher than last year, despite heavy police efforts to educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving.

“Clearly people don’t understand how serious drunk driving is. Many thought they would be able to get away with it and took chances, and now they will face the consequences,”  said Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesman Wayne Minnaar.

The arrest rate is of major concern to local law enforcement as the country prepares for the World Cup Games this year.

“Foreigners coming into the country must respect our laws during the World Cup. All the embassies have been informed of our strict laws on the road, and we expect them to convey the message to their people,” said JMPD representative Edna Mamonyane.

Why would people take drunk driving seriously when a black judge gets pissed and ploughs through a suburban property at speed, only to use his political influence to squash charges?

Julius “Woody” Malema, president of ANC Youth League, has dozens of fines issued against him for various violations, but bluntly refuses to “acknowledge” their validity, because “they fought the struggle against oppression”?????? I guess they don’t have traffic violations in the rest of Africa either – it must be a white-man thing.

It doesn’t really help that you can bribe the average traffic cop for the equivalent of $10…

Strict laws on the road? This bastard is lying through his teeth. I suppose anything goes when you want to give a false sense of security to tourists and foreigners attending Football (Soccer) World Cup 2010 games.

But forget drunk drivers folks. These days you are lucky if you are not hijacked as you drive out of OR Tambo aka Johannesburg International aka Jan Smuts airport by criminals pretending to be police or traffic cops.

Maybe they should legalize pot too, as Ca and NJ are doing. But I must insist on no transfats and they must eliminate salt from foods.
