The state secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, Pavel Borodin, argued Friday that a common trade union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan will result in a reformed Soviet Union by 2017.
Bordin told reporters that the trade union would likely draw former Soviet states, such as the Ukraine and Georgia. 2017 is an important date because it marks 100 years since the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, he said.
In a joint statement announcing the agreement, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev said they would deepen the process of integration under the framework of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC).
“A common economic space will be established before Jan. 1, 2012,” said the statement.
Deputy Secretary Vasily Khrol said Belarusians and Russians would be able to travel and work in each other’s countries without any restrictions. Diplomatic assistance would also be given freely to citizens of both countries.
Former Russian vice premier Boris Nemtsov compared the trade agreement to that between Hitler and Mussolini during the 1940′s, and predicted its failure.
“I do not believe in unions between dictatorial leaders. Authoritarian leaders are inclined to usurp power and not inclined to delegate a part of their power to anyone. Neither Hitler and Mussolini nor Lukashenka and Putin had a normal union. These declarations, oaths of friendship are for the naive. How long have they been fooling us with “Belarusian–Russian union”? Where’s this “union”? I don’t see it. if we want any economic integration the only chance is democratization of Russia, democratization of Belarus, democratization of Kazakhstan. Without this, all Almaty agreements are talking to the wind,” he told Radio Svaboda.
