South African blogger Uhuru Guru of the popular South Africa Sucks blog has been released after spending the night in the Linden SAPS cells in Johannesburg.
The blogger was arrested in a dawnlight raid on his home Wednesday by no less than five police bureaus, including Organised Crime, Cyber Crime, and Vehicle Ttheft. After breaking down his door, officers confiscated all computer equipment and cell phones in the home, and allegedly harassed his wife and little daughters.
Police cited an offense from 1993 for the raid but would not go into detail.
Uhuru Guru was repeatedly questioned by several Afrikaner officers, including Captain Eugene van der Linde, on his political affiliations, such as his connections with the right-wing Afrikaner activist Dr. Dan Roodt, and the South Africa Sucks blog. Despite heavy pressures, the blogger refused to break down from the grilling and did not answer any questions.
The State Prosecutor noted that the charges stem from a 19-year-old case that was not properly investigated and refused to put it on the roll, releasing Uhuru Guru on his own recognizance. However, many believe this is just the beginning of a long legal battle for the conservative pundit, who uses his website to criticize the ANC-run South African government.
South Africa Sucks has been targeted by various Leftist groups and the South African government since its inception in 2004. It has been banned from Google and other search engines and hacked because of its controversial political content.
