Moderate Republican Christopher Christie has beaten Democrat incumbent John Corzine in the race for New Jersey governor.
Christie vowed during his campaign to tackle the state’s economic problems with the same voracity he took on crime during his years as a federal prosecutor.
The widely-unpopular Corzine was backed by a huge warchest, which he heavily used to put out negative commercials about his opponent’s weight. Barack Obama also visited the state three times during the race to campaign for the Democrat incumbent.
A third party candidate, Christopher Daggett, appeared at one point to be a spoiler for Republican Christie’s chances, scoring 20% in one opinion poll. He ended the evening not breaking double digits.
In the end, Christie beat out Corzine by 49-44.
