New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has won re-election to a third term in a race much closer than recent polls had predicted.
Independent-Republican Bloomberg beat out Democrat rival Bill Thompson 51-46.
Many voters were not happy with Bloomberg’s decision to go against the two-term limits put in place that New Yorkers voted into effect in 1993 and upheld in 1996.
Bloomberg also spent US $85 million of his own money for the campaign, which overall cost US $100 million and outspent his competition by 14-to-1.
