A coalition of Latin American and Caribbean nations have agreed to adopt a new regional currency aimed at reducing the power of the US dollar.
The sucre will be used in Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Dominica, Saint Vincent, Antigua and Barbuda. It was adopted by the nations, who call their coalition the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (Alba), after a two-day summit in Bolivia.
The sucre will first be only used in commercial exchanges between the nations instead of the dollar. An agreement on the value of the sucre relative to regional currencies is 90 percent complete.
Ecuador replaced the US dollar with the sucre as its official currency back in 2000.
