Republican nominee Dierdre Scozzafava has suspended her campaign for New York State’s 23rd Congressional District, citing dropping poll numbers and lack of money.
The announcement comes on the heels of last week’s endorsement of Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman by former Alaskan governor and GOP Vice President nominee Sarah Palin, who was critical of Scozzafava’s more liberal social platform.
The race, which ends this coming Tuesday, is now between Conservative Hoffman and Democrat nominee Bill Owens. The last Siena College poll put Owens at 36, Hoffman at 35 and Scozzafava at 20 percent, with 9 percent undecided.
Scozzafava did not endorse either of the remaining candidates, opting instead to allow her supporters make their own choice.
“It is my hope that with my actions today, my party will emerge stronger and our district and our nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduring strength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations,” she said.
